How to prepare for your MOT in 10 minutes
Simple checks that avoid an easy fail.
Published 05/10/2026
Around a third of MOT failures are for things you can check yourself.
Quick checks
- Lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights and the number plate light.
- Tyres: at least 1.6 mm of tread across the central three quarters, no cuts or bulges.
- Wipers and washers: no tears, and top up the screen wash.
- Windscreen: no damage over 10 mm in the driver's view.
- Warning lights: an airbag, ABS or engine light on the dash is a fail.
- Number plates: clean, legal font and spacing.
- Horn and seatbelts: all working and latching.
You can book your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date.
