How often should you service your car?
Time or mileage, whichever comes first, and why it matters.
Published 09/10/2026
Most cars need a service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Why time matters as well as miles
Oil breaks down over time even if you hardly drive. Short journeys are hardest on an engine because it rarely warms up fully.
Signs you are overdue
- A service light on the dash
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick
- Rougher running or higher fuel use
Add your car to your free Trusted Garage Network account and we'll remind you when the next service is due.
